Coca-Cola (KO)

Coca-Cola Co., the world’s largest soft-drink maker, said third-quarter profit rose less than 1 percent as volume gains in Mexico and China were countered by a decline in North America. The shares fell in New York trading. Net income increased to $1.9 billion from $1.89 billion a year earlier, the Atlanta-based company said today in a statement. Revenue fell 4.2 percent to $8.04 billion, the company said.
Coke CEO said consumer sentiment will recover slowly into 2010.

Avon Products Inc. signed Black Eyed Peas frontwoman Fergie to a multiyear deal as they up the ante in the celebrity fragrance space.
Fergie, 34, whose real name is Stacy Ferguson, is the latest high-profile name to join Avon’s growing cast of celebrities. The list includes Reese Witherspoon; Patrick Dempsey and his wife, makeup artist Jillian Dempsey; Courteney Cox; Derek Jeter; Jennifer Hudson, whose contract is due to expire, and in Latin America, Salma Hayek. Walgreen (WAG)

The board of Walgreen Co. (NYSE: WAG) (NASDAQ: WAG) announced it has authorized a new $2 billion share repurchase program. The program, which expires at the end of 2013, replaces the previous $1 billion plan announced in January 2007 which had approximately $655 million remaining. Since 2004, Walgreens has repurchased more than $1.3 billion of common stock.
Walgreen's board also declared a regularly quarterly dividend of 13.75 cents per share, a 22.2 percent increase over the year-ago dividend, and set a long-term dividend payout target of 30 to 35 percent of net earnings.

Safeway Inc. today reported net income of $128.8 million ($0.31 per diluted share) for the third quarter of 2009 compared to net income of $199.7 million ($0.46 per diluted share) for the third quarter of 2008.
Safeway's CEO said sales remained soft, driven largely by deflation in dairy, produce and meat, and a sluggish economy, but company is encouraged encouraged that its household and transaction counts increased in the quarter, and that volume trends continue to improve.

Costco (COST)

Costco announced a 3% decrease in net sales over its fiscal Q4 which ended August 30. Sales over the period dropped from $22.63 billion to $21.89 billion. Net sales over the fiscal year 2009 dropped 2% from $70.98 billion to $69.89 billion. Net income during Q4 was $374 million, compared with $398 million in the year ago period. Net income for fiscal year 2009 was $1.09 billion, compared with $1.28 billion in fiscal year 2008.
The company cites the recession and foreign exchange rates as key contributors to the operating results.
