Microsoft has unveiled its Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview, including expanded support for HTML5, hardware-accelerated graphics and text, and a new JavaScript engine.
Together these allow developers to use the same markup and deliver graphically and functionally rich Web applications that take advantage of modern PC hardware through a modern operating system.

Microsoft Corp. has entered into an intellectual property licensing agreement with Panasonic Corp. to provide it with access to Microsoft’s Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT) technology, the latest generation of Microsoft’s file system.
Panasonic is one of the latest companies to adopt exFAT technology through Microsoft’s new licensing program. The technolog enables rich, ntegrated media experiences for users.

Microsoft Corp. has announced it has signed a patent cross-license agreement with Amazon.com Inc. The agreement provides each company with access to the other’s patent portfolio and covers a broad range of products and technology, including coverage for Amazon’s popular e-reading device, Kindle™, which employs both open source and Amazon’s proprietary software components, and Amazon’s use of Linux-based servers.
Although specific terms of the agreement are confidential, Microsoft indicated that Amazon.com will pay Microsoft an undisclosed amount of money under the agreement

Microsoft has introduced its latest version of its ‘Windows phone operating system’, adding video-games and music features. Microsoft wants to change things around with the inclusion of the phone features in its operating system.
This is a bid to avoid Apple and Google eating into its market share; Microsoft wants to stem its losses in smartphone category and wants to give customers a whole new meaning to the smartphone category.

China is a vital market for Microsoft's Web search business, as it chases leaders Baidu Inc and Google in the world's biggest Internet market, the company said.
Since launching its English-language Bing search site in June, Microsoft has been gaining steady share in the United States, with 10.3% in November versus 17.5% for Yahoo and 65.6% for dominant player Google, according to comScore. Microsoft hopes to get off to a similar fast start with its Chinese-language Bing site, which is still in its beta phase following a low-key launch in June.

Thomas Weisel Partners analyst Tim Klasell repeated his Overweight rating on Microsoft while lifting his target on the stock to $35, from $31.
Klasell upped his EPS forecast for the June 2010 fiscal year to $1.86, from $1.73; for FY 2011 he goes to $2.11, from $1.96. “The outlook for hardware shipments and the overall IT spending environment in 2010 has improved and the company has reduced its cost structure,” he writes.

McKool Smith is announcing that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit today upheld a $290 million verdict and permanent injunction against Microsoft in a Texas patent infringement case won by Toronto-based technology provider i4i Inc.
In its ruling today, the Federal Circuit affirmed the May 20, 2009 jury verdict of $200 million for Microsoft’s willful infringement of an i4i patent covering a document production system that implements what Microsoft has called Custom XML.

Microsoft posted quarterly earnings and revenues that surpassed Wall Street estimates Friday. First-quarter net income fell to $3.57 billion, or 40 cents a share, beating the 32-cent average estimate of analysts. Revenue, excluding $1.47 billion deferred to a future quarter, was $12.9 billion. Analysts had projected sales of $12.4 billion for the period ended Sept. 30.
The company said sales of Windows and Xbox exceeded expectations due to strong consumer demand and that cost discipline drove earnings per share growth.
