Sprint to Cut As Many as 2500 Jobs
Sprint Nextel Corp. Monday announced the company will take actions in the fourth quarter of 2009 to reduce internal and external labor costs by at least $350 million on an annualized basis. The actions include the elimination of 2,000 to 2,500 positions within the company. The impact on geographic locations will vary, and many impacted positions will be eliminated by December 31, 2009.

Sprint Nextel Posts Wider Than Expected Q3 Loss
Sprint Nextel said its quarterly losse loss grew to $478 million, or 17 cents per share, from $326 million, or 11 cents, a year earlier. Sales fell 8.8 percent to $8.04 billion.
This is a wider loss than expected by analysts.

Qwest Profit Slides 6%
Qwest said its third quarter net income was $136 million or $0.08 per share, compared to $145 million or $0.08 per share in the same quarter last year. Sales declined 9.6 percent to $3.05 billion.
The company said wireless substitution, increased unemployment, low business formation and soft housing trends" in its 14-state region continued to hamper voice revenues.

Verizon Q3 Profit Falls, But Tops Estimates
Verizon Communications Inc. posted lower third quarter earnings reflecting higher merger and restructuring costs. Third-quarter net income attributable to Verizon was $2.89 billion, down 29.5% from $3.19 billion reported in the same period a year ago. On a per share basis, earnings fell 30.5% to $0.41 from $0.59 in the same quarter of last year. Operating revenues for the latest quarter advanced 10.2% to $27.3 billion from the previous year's revenue of $24.8 billion
Good news was that adjusted earnings and operating revenues surpassed Wall Street expectations.

Sprint to Acquire Affiliate iPCS
Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) agreed to acquire affiliate iPCS Inc. for $426 million, the last of the major independent affiliates of Sprint, in a deal that will also end their legal battle.
IPCS had been arguing that Sprint's 2005 acquisition of Nextel violated an exclusivity agreement with iPCS, which is the Nextel affiliate in the territories in which it operates. IPCS has some 700,000 customers in seven states.
