Motorola, Inc. and Sprint announced the Motorola i1, the world's first push-to-talk Android(TM)-powered smartphone. The Motorola i1 is the first iDEN device to carry the features of a modern smartphone including a 3.1-inch touch screen, Wi-Fi(R), optimized browsing experience with the latest Opera Mini 5 browser, access to thousands of apps and a push-to-talk experience that includes new features. Sprint will begin offering Motorola i1 this summer.

Sprint Nextel Corp. said RealNetworks Inc. will take over distribution of Sprint’s music-related products and services, including the sale of songs, ringtones and ringback tones to wireless customers. Seattle-based RealNetworks, which sells music, video, messaging and other services to 86 wireless providers globally, plans to provide the content through a unified online store, rather than with a series of sites, as Sprint now distributes the content

Sprint has announced a partnership with GetJar, the world's second largest app store. Through this agreement, GetJar's catalog of more than 60,000 free applications will now be available to all Sprint customers with feature phones such as the LG Lotus EliteTM, Samsung ReclaimTM and the Sanyo 2700. In addition, Sprint customers with RIM BlackBerry(R) and Windows Mobile devices also will have access to the GetJar library of applications.
This opens up the world of apps to customers who may not have a smartphone.

Sprint Nextel Corp. Monday announced the company will take actions in the fourth quarter of 2009 to reduce internal and external labor costs by at least $350 million on an annualized basis. The actions include the elimination of 2,000 to 2,500 positions within the company. The impact on geographic locations will vary, and many impacted positions will be eliminated by December 31, 2009.

Sprint Nextel said its quarterly losse loss grew to $478 million, or 17 cents per share, from $326 million, or 11 cents, a year earlier. Sales fell 8.8 percent to $8.04 billion.
This is a wider loss than expected by analysts.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) agreed to acquire affiliate iPCS Inc. for $426 million, the last of the major independent affiliates of Sprint, in a deal that will also end their legal battle.
IPCS had been arguing that Sprint's 2005 acquisition of Nextel violated an exclusivity agreement with iPCS, which is the Nextel affiliate in the territories in which it operates. IPCS has some 700,000 customers in seven states.
