IBM Launches New Line of Servers
IBM today unveiled new System x servers that offer increased memory and can help improve efficiency to allow customers to better exploit virtualization and support more sophisticated workloads.
These new products mean IBM has completely revamped its line up of two-socket x86 servers
IBM Awarded Government Modernization Contract
IBM has been awarded a contract to modernize the U.S. Government's Acquisition and Procurement System. IBM will work to modernize a system that federal agencies and their suppliers use to source equipment, supplies, information technology (IT) and telecommunications services. The award made by the U.S. General Services Administration has a contract value of $74.4 million over an eight-year period.
This is another feather in the cap of IBM's services push.
HP Fiscal Q1 Profit Up 25%
Hewlett Packard said late Wednesday its fiscal first-quarter profit was $2.3 billion, or 96 cents a share, on revenue of $31.2 billion. During the year-ago quarter, the computer and printing giant earned $1.9 billion, or 75 cents a share, on $28.8 billion in sales.
Earnings and sales topped analyst estimates.
Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone 7 Series
Microsoft has introduced its latest version of its ‘Windows phone operating system’, adding video-games and music features. Microsoft wants to change things around with the inclusion of the phone features in its operating system.
This is a bid to avoid Apple and Google eating into its market share; Microsoft wants to stem its losses in smartphone category and wants to give customers a whole new meaning to the smartphone category.
Intel, Nokia Merge Software Platforms
Intel Corporation and Nokia said today they are merging their popular Moblin and Maemo software platforms, creating a unified Linux-based platform that will run on multiple hardware platforms across a wide range of computing devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems.
The companies believe the open software platform will accelerate industry innovation and time-to-market for a wealth of new Internet-based applications and services.
Oracle Buys Convergin
Oracle has agreed to acquire Convergin, a leading provider of real-time service brokering solutions. Convergin’s industry-leading J2EE-based Service Broker platform enables communications service providers (CSPs) to manage services for a wide range of networks and application platforms, including pre-paid charging. The solution allows CSPs to focus on launching innovative services while modernizing to next-generation networks.
Oracle believes the combination of Oracle and Convergin will accelerate new service innovation while reducing network complexity and cost.
Dell To Buy System Mgt. Appliance Company
Dell said today it has agreed to acquire KACE, a leading systems management appliance company with solutions tailored to the requirements of midsized businesses and public (government, education and healthcare) institutions.
The move puts Dell more into the system administrator side of I/T.
HP today expanded its award-winning HP Officejet portfolio with its most affordable flatbed all-in-one printer. Starting at $99, the new HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One series brings professional quality color printing, wired and wireless connectivity, and four-in-one functionality to the home office at a low cost per page.
This product continues HP's leadership in the small business market.
