Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL) said Monday it will charge for meals on many of its U.S., Canada and Latin American routes starting in fall, according to MarketWatch. However, the airline will continue to offer complimentary food in economy class on all intercontinental flights and domestic routes over six hours.
The airline is continuing to invest in services and amenities that customers value. For instance, Continental is deploying DIRECTV live television service and new flat-bed BusinessFirst seats. GoGo inflight internet service will make its debut on Continental later this year.

Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL) will begin charging coach customers extra if they want a seat with more legroom, according to The Baltimore Sun. Starting March 17, coach customers will be able to pay the charge at check-in to get an exit-row seat with at least 7 inches more legroom than the other rows, Continental said Wednesday.
"Seats with additional legroom are higher-value seats, and we want to offer them to customers who recognize that value," said Jim Compton, Continental's executive vice president and chief marketing officer. As reported earlier in MarketBeast, airlines are now looking at any possible way to increase their revenue per flying passenger.

Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) today reported a February consolidated (mainline plus regional) load factor of 77.7 percent, 5.2 points above the February 2009 consolidated load factor, and a mainline load factor of 78.1 percent, 5.2 points above the February 2009 mainline load factor. Both February load factors were records for the month.
Continental estimates that the suspension of operations at its New York hub on February 10, 2010, and February 26, 2010, due to severe winter weather in the New York area reduced its consolidated passenger revenue for the month by approximately $25 million.

Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) today announced the expansion of its mobile boarding pass service to London's Heathrow Airport, becoming the first carrier to offer paperless boarding passes on nonstop flights from the United Kingdom to the U.S. The service allows customers to receive boarding passes electronically on their cell phones or PDAs and eliminates the need for paper boarding passes. Mobile boarding passes display a two-dimensional bar code along with passenger and flight information, which scanners at the security checkpoint and boarding gate validate. The technology prevents manipulation or duplication of the boarding passes and heightens security.
Continental was the first carrier to offer paperless boarding passes in the U.S. in a pilot program with the Transportation Security Administration that began in December 2007. The airline currently offers mobile boarding passes at 42 airports, including its hubs in New York, Houston and Cleveland. Continental was the first U.S. carrier to offer mobile boarding passes from an international destination when it launched the service at Frankfurt Airport late last year.

Continental Airlines Inc (NYSE:CAL) is cutting 600 reservation agent jobs, effective April 11, as customers increasingly book flights online, according to Reuters. Continental, which has 2,600 reservation agents, told its employees about the furloughs on Monday. The airline, also, will not renew a third-party contract for handling calls. The airline said it saw a 15 percent drop per year in call volume as customers book tickets on the Internet.
Houston-based Continental said it will offer an 'early-out' program to reservation employees who have worked at the carrier for 10 years. It will offer severance and outplacement services for employees affected by the cuts. Continental is just one of many airlines that are seeing increased internet sales. The trend in online booking is reducing the amount of time that a flyer needs in booking a reservation versus human communication. Analysis indicates that like bank ATMs, on line booking can be very profitable for the airlines in a time of charging for various amenities.

Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) and its wholly-owned subsidiary Continental Micronesia today submitted a joint application to the Department of Transportation to provide nonstop service from the carriers' hubs in New York/Newark and Guam to Tokyo's Haneda airport.
Continental and Continental Micronesia seek the route awards as part of a historic open skies agreement between the U.S. and Japan, which is anticipated to come into force later this year. The open skies agreement would provide the U.S. airline industry access to Haneda, with its close proximity to Tokyo's central business district, for the first time in over 30 years. Both the New York and Guam hubs, two major gateways for passenger traffic to Tokyo, also provide convenient connecting opportunities for travel between Tokyo Haneda and numerous additional points. Continental Airlines is the world's fifth largest airline.
