Comcast, the largest U.S. cable company, and General Electric Thursday said they have signed a definitive agreement to form a joint venture that will be 51 percent owned by Comcast, 49 percent owned by GE and be managed by Comcast. The joint venture will consist of the NBC Universal (NBCU) businesses and Comcast's cable networks, regional sports networks and certain digital properties and certain unconsolidated investments.,
The companies said the venture will be well positioned to compete in "an increasingly dynamic and competitive media and digital environment."

Comcast said Wednesday it earned $944 million, or 33 cents per share, compared with $771 million, or 26 cents, in the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue was up 3 percent to $8.8 billion, slightly shy of the $8.85 billion analysts were forecasting.
Analysts were expecting earnings of about 25 cents per share.

Comcast today announced it is launching next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 and making the leap from broadband to wideband in several areas of California, including Fresno, Merced, Modesto, Stockton, Tracy, Tulare, Visalia, as well as Santa Barbara County.
Comcast now offers some of the fastest speeds available today in Central California, including the Extreme 50 tier with download speeds of up to 50 Mbps. Wideband also enables Comcast to double speeds for the majority of existing high-speed Internet customers.

Comcast is the first major carrier to protest broadband stimulus applications.
David Cohen, Comcast's executive vice president, claims that since the U.S. Broadband stimulus funding program was designated to bring broadband services to areas where service is not available, targeting areas where it already provides service could 'violate eligibility rules.'

Comcast will be the first cable TV operator to make available to subscribers online access to popular cable shows and movies with a goal to replicate what's available on television through video on demand.
Time Warner Cable and others plan to do the same as the pay-TV companies look to meet the demand for online video while preserving subscription revenue.

Comcast Corp., DirecTV Group Inc. and 11 other pay-TV providers won dismissal of an antitrust lawsuit brought by consumers who said they are harmed by the industry practice of bundling programs in subscription packages.
The complaint accused the companies of preventing competition among TV providers by offering only prepackaged tiers of programs and by refusing to allow consumers to buy channels “a la carte.”

Comcast breached several contracts and federal law by delivering high end telecommunications services via equipment attached to the poles the utility company uses to distribute electricity alleges Dominion Virginia Power.
The power company says that Comcast only had the right to deliver audio and video services over the equipment. Rights to use the pole attachments for additional services would have cost Comcast more, the complaint states. Neither side immediately returned requests for comment.
