Marvell (MRVL)

Marvell reported a third-quarter profit of 35 cents a share, on sales of $803.1 million. One year ago, Marvell reported earnings of 23 cents a share on $791 million in sales. Marvell forecasts it will earn between 33 cents and 39 cents a share in fourth quarter, excluding one-time items, with sales in range of $820 million to $850 million.
Marvell makes chips for a wide variety of products, including Western Digital's hard drives and Research in Motion's BlackBerry smartphones. The company said it has seen improved demand across its entire portfolio.

Cisco (CSCO)

Cisco Systems Inc. said Wednesday it now has about 84 percent of Tandberg ASA’s shares.
Cisco's holdings now bring it closer to completing a 19 billion-kroner ($3.39 billion) purchase of the Norwegian maker of video-conferencing systems.

Gartner, Inc., the leading provider of research and analysis on the global information technology industry, Tuesday announced that it has agreed to acquire AMR Research, Inc. for approximately $64 million in cash, subject to certain closing adjustments. With projected full year 2009 revenues of approximately $40 million, AMR Research is a leading research and advisory services firm serving supply chain management and IT professionals.

HP (HPQ)

HP said Monday that its earnings jumped 14 percent to $2.4 billion, or 99 cents per share, in the three months ended Oct. 31, compared with $2.1 billion, or 84 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding one-time items, net income totaled $1.14 per share. Sales fell 8 percent to $30.8 billion, or dropped 5 percent if currency fluctuations are stripped out. HP also added $8 billion to its stock buyback program, boosting the total amount available to $12 billion.
Sales and earnings exceeded expectations.

CIENA (CIEN)

Ciena Corp., a fiber-optic gear maker for phone companies, won an auction for Nortel Networks Corp.’s optical-networking business, topping a bid from Nokia Siemens Networks by raising its offer to $769 million. Ciena will pay $530 million in cash and issue $239 million of convertible notes, according to a statement from the company today. It expects to close the deal in the first quarter.

Dell (DELL)

Dell Thursday night reported net income of $337 million, or 17 cents a share, in the quarter that ended on Oct. 30, down from $727 million, or 37 cents a share, it earned in the same period last year. Dell’s revenue fell to $12.9 billion from $15.16 billion,
Earnings and revenues missed Street estimates.

Adobe Systems (ADBE)

CNET is reporting that Adobe Systems expects to cut 680 full-time employees, or about 9 percent of its global workforce, as the company tries to align costs in the face of lagging sales. In September, Adobe reported that its fiscal third-quarter profit fell 29 percent amid declining sales.
Sales are down 38% through the 3rd quarter of 2009 compared to 2008. Adobe currently has a PE of 38, which seems very high for a company whose sales are declining at that pace.

Applied Materials (AMAT)

Applied Materials Inc. said it plans to acquire Semitool Inc. for $364 million in cash, The $11 a share offer is a 31% premium over Semitool's Monday closing price. The deal would come on the heels of Applied Materials' acquisition of privately held Advent Solar.
The Semitool deal would boost the chip toolmaker's efforts in growing parts of the chip manufacturing market.
