Alcoa said Thursday that funding has been approved for the complete repair and refurbishment of its 50,000-ton forging press at the company’s Cleveland Works.
The project will help make the Cleveland Works operation a premier producer of large aluminum and titanium forgings for the defense, aerospace and industrial markets.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking public review of a proposed agreement with Dow Chemical that establishes a process for evaluating dioxin contamination in Saginaw Bay, the Tittabawassee and Saginaw rivers and their floodplains.
The agreement comes after months of confidential negotiations involving Dow, EPA and the state of Michigan, and represents the first proposed settlement between the Obama administration and the chemical giant responsible for contamination of Michigan’s largest watershed.

DuPont announced that its Board of Directors has elected Chief Executive Officer Ellen Kullman, Chair effective December 31.
Charles O. Holliday, Jr. Chair, will retire from the Board after 11 years as its Chairman. Kullman became CEO effective January 1 after Holliday served as DuPont's CEO for 10 years.

Ball Corporation today reported third quarter net earnings of $103.7 million, or $1.09 cents per diluted share, on sales of $1.97 billion, compared to earnings of $101.9 million, or $1.05 cents per diluted share, on sales of $2.01 billion in the third quarter of 2008.

International Paper said that its third quarter net income rose to $371 million, or 87 cents a share, from $149 million, or 35 cents, a year earlier. Net income included $525 million in U.S. pretax credits for burning the alternative fuel black liquor, a pulp-wood residue. Sales in the third quarter fell 13 percent to $5.92 billion from $6.81 billion a year ago.
But CEO John Faraci said that at the end of the quarter the company "began to see some modest improvements in demand in some segments of our paper and packaging businesses."

Dow Chemical lost a request for dismissal of a claim brought against it over an alleged European rubber cartel.
The High Court in London ruled today that Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., the second-largest U.S. tiremaker, and a group of other companies can sue Dow in the U.K. Lawyers for Dow argued at a hearing earlier this month that the court shouldn’t consider the case because the alleged cartel didn’t operate in England.
