Lexmark International Inc. (LXK) announced additional job cuts and reported third-quarter profit slumped 73% on restructuring costs - but also said demand is improving in both its hardware and printing services businesses.
Excluding the restructuring charges, Lexmark said Tuesday its results were far better than its downbeat forecast. The printer maker's fourth-quarter forecast came in above Wall Street estimates, helping to send the stock higher.

Abbott Labs was granted 510(k)
clearance by the FDA for an antibody cyclic-citrulinated peptide, or anti-CCP assay, to
run on its ARCHITECT immunoassay analyzers.
Many patients with RA develop an immune response against proteins containing
citrulline long before they present symptoms of the disease. Studies show
detecting the level of these antibodies earlier in the disease continuum, in
conjunction with other clinical information, is critical to the early
diagnosis of the disease.

Pfizer Inc. on Tuesday posted a higher third-quarter profit despite the recession, as sharp cost cuts made up for a dip in sales.
The maker of cholesterol fighter Lipitor, impotence treatment Viagra and smoking cessation drug Chantix slashed costs on everything from manufacturing and marketing to research and development to produce a profit of $2.88 billion. That was up 26 percent from $2.28 billion a year earlie

BlackRock reported Q3 earnings of $2.10 per share on profits of $317 million versus $1.67 per share on profits of $217 million in the year ago period.
Analysts had forecast $1.93 per share. The estimate and earnings are adjusted for costs including integration charges for the purchase of Barclays Global Investors and compensation obligations for large shareholders PNC Financial Services Group and Bank of America's Merrill Lynch unit.

Supermarket chain Supervalu Inc (SVU.N) gave its full-year profit forecast another trim and cut its quarterly dividend in half on Tuesday.
The operator of about 2,500 Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's and Save-A-Lot supermarkets has been underperforming rivals amid intense price competition from the likes of Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N), Kroger Co (KR.N) and Safeway Inc (SWY.N). Supervalu said it expects consumer spending will remain pressured throughout its fiscal year.

Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) posted better-than-expected quarterly profit aided by a lower tax rate and share count on Tuesday, but revenue missed Wall Street estimates and the defense contractor warned earnings would drop in 2010, sending its shares down more than 5 percent.
But, Goldman Sachs analyst Noah Poponak said it is "difficult to find any positives" in the results." "Similar to last quarter's disappointment, we believe results indicate that the tides are changing in defense vs. the weaker-than-expected results being attributable to company- specific issues."

DuPont reported earnings for the quarter of $0.45 per share on net profits of $409 million versus $0.40 per share on profits of $367 million in the year ago period.
Revenue was down 18% from $7.29 billion to $5.96 billion versus analyst estimates of $6.14 billion. Revenue fell across all five of the company's segments, including its safety & protection unit, which makes the Kevlar vest.
