The Electronic Systems Center achieved the next step toward upgrading France's fleet of Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft with the recent award of a $324 million contract to the Boeing Company.
The change to Block 40/45 takes the AWACS fleet from large legacy mainframe computer architecture to more modern Windows- and Unix-based mission computing. Improved situational awareness and combat identification capabilities are two of the benefits of the upgrade.

Boeing (BA)

Brazilian airline GOL (Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA GOL) is planning to buy nine airplanes from Boeing for about $600 million, the company's chief executive, Constantino de Oliveira Jr. said in an interview published Thursday in the local financial newspaper Valor Economico.
The executive, however, did not unveil an exact timetable for the purchase.

FedEx (FDX)

Jet Airways (India) Ltd, which runs India’s largest airline, is in initial discussions with FedEx Corp. for a dedicated cargo airline that it wishes to set up either as a joint venture or in alliance with the multinational logistics firm, according to the Global Supply Chain Network, as well as two executives of the airline familiar with the development, who did not want to be identified. Jet originally planned to launch an all cargo airline with Deutsche Lufthansa AG, however, the global economic turndown halted these plans. The Jet Airways executive, who declined to be identified, said FedEx was a logical choice as a partner
"India is largely untapped (as a cargo market). There is strong business for more players." said Ram C. Menen, Senior VP-Cargo, for Emirates SkyCargo, the cargo airline division of Emerites Airlines. In November, FedEx Corp. announced the launch of FedEx India, a next-business-day domestic express service (for small parcels) for the Indian market. The launch followed similar ones by the company in China, Mexico and the UK.

AMR (AMR)

Today in Tokyo, executives of Japan Airlines (JAL) and the Japanese Transport Ministry said that the carrier would remain a member of the oneworld® global alliance, anchored by AMR Corp.'s American Airlines. Japan Airlines (JAL) in a pivotal move announced its highly anticipated alliance decision by turning away from Delta and SkyTeam to strengthen its existing partnership with American Airlines (AMR) and oneworld®, according to American Airlines and Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation. oneworld® is a global alliance that brings together eleven of the world's biggest airlines. JAL and AMR, both members of the oneworld® alliance, will jointly apply to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Ministry of Land Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan (MLIT) for antitrust immunity approval on transpacific routes.
This is a pivotal move in JAL's rahabilitation and restructuring plan, and is additional support for AMR. Both AMR and JAL intend to enter a joint business venture aimed at "enhancing their scope of cooperation on routes between the US and Japan, through adjustments to their respective networks, flight schedules, and other business activities". The joint venture will be subject to government approval.

Southwest Airlines (LUV)

Southwest Airlines (LUV) stated that Passenger Revenue per Available Seat Mile (PRASM) is estimated to have increased 14-15% for January 2010. It is the largest PRASM increase in the past twelve months and the fifth consecutive month of PRASM growth for the carrier according to Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation.
Southwest, the star performer continues to improve its unit revenues, outperforming JetBlue, US Airways and Continental Airlines in the yield growth stakes in January 2010. With Southwest leading the way, it is providing hope the US airline industry may have finally turned the corner.

AMR (AMR)

AMR Corp's American Airlines is facing large fines as a result of an Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) two year long investigation over alleged safety violations. Both the FAA and the Department of Transportation, separately, will release reports outling apparent failures to identify and promptly resolve aircraft maintenance problems in 2008, which includes improperly securing wiring in 290 MD-80 jets, according to Dow Jones and the Associated Press.
The fine will likely be around $10 million according to unnamed officials. The amount is the same as was proposed against Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) in March 2008 for missed examinations of structural cracks.

AirTran (AAI)

AirTran Airways has recently announced that it has reached an agreement with its dispatchers, represented by Transport Workers Union, on a 48 month contract. The company has to still work through its pilot, and flight attendant contracts, according to the Jesup & Lamont report from Benzinga.
While the Jesup & Lamont report estimates AirTran Holdings, Inc. to make a loss of $0.15 per share in the first-quarter, the company can move to a positive earnings if the pricing is better than expectations. This would also hinge on the company securing an agreement with both the pilots and flight attenants.

Raytheon (RTN)

Raytheon has picked up a $170 million contract to supply two variations of infrared Maverick air-to-surface missiles to the United Arab Emirates.
The sale concerns the AGM-65D and AGMG2 infrared-guided missiles that gained fame during the U.S.-led operation Desert Storm.
