EU

Germany is considering what it could contribute to a European Union contingency plan to provide financial backing for Greece, the Wall Street Journal reported today. The preparations, a source said, come two days before an informal summit planned by the EU in Brussels. Separately, German Finance Ministry Spokesman Michael Offer said summit attendees would work on further steps to help Greece shore up public finances and restore calm in financial markets.

IBM today announced that UK airline bmi has launched its new look passenger check-in operations which have been transformed using the IBM self service check-in system. IBM has re-engineered bmi's kiosk, web and mobile self service check-in systems to make traveling easier and more convenient for the millions of passengers that use the airline annually.
IBM adds one more airline in Europe for which it is providing similar solutions.

GE (GE)

General Electric, which already has significant interests in Brazil, plans to invest an additional $118 million in the South American nation this year.
GE's plans include an building a Research and Development center that will serve all of Latin America, $50 million on a medical and diagnostic equipment factory in the state of Minas Gerais, a $35 million on an airplane engine maintenance plant in the capital Rio de Janeiro, a $12 million locomotive factory, and a $21 million deep-sea oil equipment plant.

Abbott Labs (ABT)

A new diagnostic tool physicians can use to monitor patients for the most common form of ovarian cancer may soon be available in the United States. Abbott’s ARCHITECT HE4 assay uses a simple blood test to help in monitoring for the recurrence or progression of epithelial ovarian cancer. If approved, this important immunoassay would be the first automated HE4 test available in the United States.
"The ability to monitor the recurrence or progression of ovarian cancer is a critical part of patient care. The ARCHITECT HE4 assay has the potential to be a powerful tool for both physicians and patients in the management of the disease," said Michael Warmuth, senior vice president, diagnostics, Abbott.

Caterpillar (CAT)

Caterpillar Inc. today announced its intent to join the FutureGen Alliance, a public-private partnership established to build a first-of-its-kind coal-fired, near-zero emissions power plant in Mattoon, Illinois.
The FutureGen facility is designed to be the cleanest coal burning plant in the world and will integrate advanced technologies for coal gasification, electricity production, emissions control, carbon dioxide (CO 2) capture and permanent storage and hydrogen production on a commercial scale.
